Your caloric intake matters!!! As an experienced personal trainer, and nutrition expert, if you came to me and told me, “I am lethargic and I cannot focus. I feel disorganized and irritable. I cannot sleep at night and I am depressed.” The FIRST thing I would address is your diet. If you went to your doctor with the same complaints, chances are they would prescribe an anti-depressant, a sleeping pill, and/or a mood enhancement type drug. Not all doctors take this route, but many doctors do not understand how your diet affects how you feel. The nutrients you put into your body WILL make a difference!
Rule # 1… Do not skip meals! Take in 3 meals a day.
Rule #2… Start eating soon after you wake up in the morning. This will get your energy level up, start to regulate your blood sugar, and give you energy.
Rule #3… Have snacks in between meals. Some examples of healthy snacks are fruits and vegetables. Greek yogurt and string cheese, if you are NOT lactose intolerant, are good choices.
Rule #4… You may have to supplement your diet with a protein shake. There are many on the market and not all are created equal, so choose wisely! You may be wasting your money.
In addition to that lethargic feeling, lack of focus, irritability, and having trouble staying organized, under eating will cause weight gain. When you have a lack of nutrients in your body, its’ defense mechanism kicks in, and right into starvation mode you go!
